The Healing Place: Changing the Narrative on World Suicide Prevention Day

Sep 10, 2025 | The Healing Place

Today, September 10th, is World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD). Each year, the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) invites us to pause, reflect, and act together. The 2025 theme is: Change the Narrative.

For too long, the narrative around suicide bereavement has been one of silence, stigma, and shame. Those who grieve often carry unanswered questions and a heavy burden of isolation.

It is time to change that narrative.

Sharing Stories, Reducing Stigma

When my husband Neil died by suicide, I was left shattered. In those early days, I needed to know I wasn’t alone — that others had walked this path and survived it. What I found, too often, was silence.

That silence is why I wrote my new book, The Healing Place: Navigating Grief and Healing After Suicide.

It is my personal story of navigating the aftermath of suicide loss. But more than that, it is an effort to shift the narrative:

  • From silence → to honest storytelling
  • From stigma → to compassion
  • From despair → to the possibility of healing (which is a continual process)
