The cure for addictions is not what you think. #TEDTalkTuesday

Nov 14, 2017 | Sobriety, addictions, mental health

It’s National Addictions Awareness Week in Canada. One of the things we talk about in suicide awareness is to pay attention when someone is misusing drugs and/or alcohol. This can often be signs that a person is in pain, and may be having thoughts of suicide. But what kind of pain are they in? What void are those addictions filling? What contributes to the epidemic of addictive behaviour?
Johann Hari’s TED talk “Everything you think you know about addiction is wrong” explores the root causes of addiction and what can be done to significantly reduce them in our society. Perhaps the sixties slogan “Make love not war” had it right in more ways than one.
What do you think about Hari’s reflections on what he’s learned about addictions and our approach to them? Leave us a comment below. We’d love to hear from you.
